The Ultimate Trieste Travel Guide

What to See, Where to Eat and How to Experience Trieste Like a Local

Why Trieste Is Worth Visiting

Despite its extraordinary history and cultural heritage, Trieste remains one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. International publications have repeatedly highlighted the city’s unique character. Lonely Planet included Trieste among the world’s most underrated travel destinations, while The Guardian recently described it as one of Italy’s most exciting food cities.

Day Trips and Outdoor Activities Near Trieste

 Beyond the historic center, easily reachable on foot from the apartment, Trieste offers many other unforgettable experiences. In particular, we recommend:

  • A walk along the Barcola seafront: starting from the Pineta di Barcola (reachable by taxi or buses no. 6 and 36), you can enjoy a scenic 3.5 km seaside promenade all the way to Castello di Miramare;

  • A visit to the Faro della Vittoria, reachable by taxi or buses no. 42 and 44 from Piazza Oberdan;

  • A hike along the Strada Napoleonica, a beautiful 5 km trail immersed in the nature of the Karst plateau, offering breathtaking views over the city and the Adriatic Sea;

  • A visit to Muggia and its charming harbor, reachable aboard the “Delfino Verde” boat departing from Molo dei Bersaglieri, right in front of Piazza Unità d’Italia;

  • A day trip to Val Rosandra, a stunning natural reserve with several hiking trails and a stream where it is even possible to swim during summer.

Where to Eat in Trieste: Local Food & Restaurants

Although Trieste is a seaside city, its cuisine is deeply influenced by Austro-Hungarian traditions, meaning that the most iconic local dishes are not seafood-based.

Some of the city’s specialties include boiled meats, jota soup, ham baked in bread crust, plum gnocchi, “patate in tecia” (pan-fried potatoes), and chifeletti… delicious local comfort food waiting to be discovered.

For traditional boiled meats and the famous “caldaia cuisine,” we highly recommend Buffet da Pepi. If you enjoy spicy flavors, ask for extra mustard and kren (horseradish root), ideally paired with a cold beer.

For ham baked in bread crust and other local specialties, we suggest Trattoria da Giovanni.

To try jota, the traditional sauerkraut soup best enjoyed in winter, head to Buffet Da Siora Rosa.

For plum gnocchi and chifeletti, often served in traditional Karst-area trattorias, one of our favorite spots is Osteria Sardoč, also famous for its Ljubljanska and unforgettable fried chicken.

As for “patate in tecia,” you will find them almost everywhere in Trieste — and for good reason.

For a special dinner, consider:

And finally, for gelato lovers, the mandatory stop is Gelateria Zampolli. Every flavor is fantastic, but the “Nutella variegato” is legendary.

Coffee Culture: A Guide to Local Customs

Did you know that Trieste has one of Italy’s most important coffee traditions — and even its own coffee vocabulary?

  • An espresso is called a “nero”

  • Espresso with a drop of milk: “gocciato”

  • Macchiato: “capo”

  • A true local orders a “capo in b” — a macchiato served in a small glass cup

  • Cappuccino at breakfast? Ask for a “cappuccio in tazza grande”

No worries if it sounds confusing at first — coffee in Trieste is almost always excellent.

For an elegant coffee break, we recommend the historic Caffè degli Specchi in Piazza Unità d’Italia.

Beaches: Where to Swim and Relax

 If you visit during summer, don’t forget your swimsuit.

Trieste is not only rich in history and food culture — it also boasts a beautiful coastline.

Here are some of the best spots for a refreshing swim:

  • Barcola Seafront — a free-access seaside area with ladders into the sea, freshwater showers, and the famous local kiosks known as “baracchini.”

  • Sticco Mare — located near Miramare Park, where you can reserve sunbeds and enjoy the beach club atmosphere.

  • Grignano 2 – Riviera Beach — a fully equipped beach club along the coastal road, with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a restaurant.

  • Purobeach Portopiccolo — an exclusive beach destination with pools, lounge areas, restaurants, and spectacular sea views.

  • Boa Beach — on the Muggia side of the city, offering both free beach areas and equipped facilities.
